"It's Armageddon in Sydney" by Katrina Whitehead

1. "It's Armageddon in Sydney" by Katrina Whitehead: Did you guys see the crazy shit that happened in Australia? These stunning photos capture the full, lusciously lovely photos of the dust storm that turned the city burnt sienna.

2. MBFW "Runway to Service" Fashion Auction: I love this: as part of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, several fashion week designers have donated items from their Spring collection to charity auction of those items September 11, 2009 through September 30, 2009. A great way to get your new fashion bling, for an amazing cause.

3. A Step Down the Runway in the Right Direction: One small step for regular women everywhere: Mark Fast’s London Fashion Week show last Saturday featured "curvy" women strutting down the runway along the standard, rail-thin oddities commonly referred to as "models." HI-FUCKING-FIVE.

4. Dads In Short Shorts: One of the memories from childhood written in indelible marker on my brain is my Italian dad wandering around in his summer uniform: a V-neck white t-shirt, a gold chain, Reeboks, and the shortest shorts you can imagine. It's good to know I am not alone in my scarring.

5. "Bee" Comic: This just kills me.

6. Top 5 Best Salons for Curly Hair in New York: Anyone with curly hair can tell you what a nightmare it is to find someone who can cut your hair without making you look like stuck your fingers in a socket. I have an appointment at Devachan in 2 weeks - stoked!

7. Gravitational Corridors: Scientists in the United States are trying to map the twisting ''tubes'' of attractive forces between planets and moons so they can be used to cut the cost of journeys in space. We are getting closer and closer to THIS.

Finally, a little video about the IFB Dress-Up Soiree I attended last week - featuring none other than yours truly! Ya, I am a nerd.

Ziegfeld Girls

1. Ziegfeld Girls: This photo collection of women who performed in the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1910's-20's is simply magical.

2. The Kymera Wand: Possibly the greatest thing ever made ever, the Kymera's a highly authentic "magic" wand that functions as a universal remote for anything with an infrared sensor, from TVs to ceiling fans, simply by using its 13 predefined gestures. Everyone take note, this is my Christmas present, please. Accio stereo!

3. Windows for $30: Apparently Microsoft has lost its mind, and is offering their new version of Windows for $30 to anyone with a working college email. Now, to convince them I attend G. Mail University...

4. JRR Tolkien trained as British spy: As if the creator of hobbits wasn't awesome enough, it has recently been discovered that Tolkein was actually being groomed by the British Secret Service to do some James Bond-type shit. Now hang your head, and wonder why your life isn't THAT RAD.

5. Snuggie Fashion Show: Um, yeah.

6. Harry Potter theme park set for 2010: Universal Studios is opening a theme park dedicated to the world of Harry Potter. I plan on permanently moving to Hogsmeade. Whether they let me, or not. Accio squatter's rights!

7. Centenarian desires 23rd husband: 107-year-old Malaysian native Wook Kundor is saying she wants to marry for the 23rd time. I expect TLC to give her own TV show in exactly....now.

And finally, Jarbas Agnelli discovers proof that birds are secretly composers...

2. Hobbyist Launches Camera Into Space: Step 1: Use hobby kit to create a computer-controlled camera. Step 2: Stick it in a protective box, and launch that sucker into space. Step 3: Facebook that shit. This is the FUTURE!

3. Normandy 1944: Then & Now: The events that occurred in Normandy during World War 2 were, in a word, remarkable. But what might be just as remarkable is how much of the city is still as it was, structurally speaking. These photo comparisons are startling and wondrous.

4. IKEA in Beijing: In 1999, IKEA opened its first store in Beijing. The results have been...drowsy.

5.Front Row Faces: Style.com introduces the world at large to what may be the next generation of ubiquitous fashion set.

6.The Impossible Project: In the continuing effort to preserve the Kodak camera, Urban Outfitters is selling some of the final stock of Polaroid Camera Kits. Get yours while you can!

7.SPIN'S 20 Worst Album Titles of 2009: Though I beg to differ with several of their choices, SPIN does capture a few real gems in this list of their considered worst. "Just Got Paid, Let's Get Laid" is positively cringe-worthy.

Finally, this fan video for Grizzly Bear's song, "Two Weeks" is one of the best music videos I have ever seen. Simply stunning...

6. Running For Roz: On Wednesday, May 20th, 2009, Lt. Roslyn Littman Schulte (Roz) was killed in Afghanistan when her vehicle drove over an IED that was buried under the ground. Finally, this is the greatest commercial EVER MADE:

Finally, something I am really excited to share. I have recently discovered TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It began in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. The site now presents dozens of talks from some of the greatest creative talent in the world today, discussing and sharing their insights and creative processes.

I have watched several of these this week, but I found this talk by Elizabeth Gilbert to be especially remarkable. I would highly recommend any creative professionals to spare 18 minutes and watch her talk, in which she shares her insights about how to exist after great successes, and creativity itself. Simply brilliant...

Young Russian peasant girls in a ural area along the Sheksna River by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii

1. Color photographs by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944),: Sergei was a Russian photographer who pioneered color photography. These restored pictures give new life to historical Russian, depicting what a beautiful, sumptuous country this cold land can be.

2. TOKYO,: This new movie by visionary directors Joon-ho Bong, Leos Carax, and Michel Gondry is sure to be a stunner - and the trailer looks fantastic.

3. Solveig, girl graffiti artist, aged 10: The phenomenal artwork of a 10-year old London girl is taking the graffiti and art world by storm. Her whimsical, colorful pieces are being compared to Picasso, except without all the girlfriends. Stunning.

4. David Byrne on the Colbert Report: The fact the David Byrne is still blowing the top off of his genre after so long just gives evidence that the inspiration machine never runs out of juice, if well-oiled and maintained. Also, the fact the fact he is able to get a surprisingly contemplative interview out of Stephen is amusing in its own right.

5. Recereation of Hudson Plane Landing: Ok, ok, I know this has been news'ed to within an inch of its life, but come on - HE LANDED A PASSENGER PLANE IN A RIVER - a river usually flush with boats, I might add. And about a 4 miles from my house, if that! This is by far the best recreation I have seen of the event, and better yet, it is synchronized with the actual radio feed. Which means you can marvel at how they are not all screaming "O MY GOD WE ARE GOING TO DIEEEE!!!!" like a normal person would.

5. Anonymous: This wiki post about ANONYMOUS reads somewhere between a weird phenomena and a creepy subversive group. It makes me feel like we all are actually living in HACKERS.

6. John Keatley shoots Annie Leibovitz: Great interview with professional photographer Keatley. My personal favorite part is how it gets in his head regarding the fantastic photo of photographic god, Ann Leibovitz, that he captured.

7. Mickey Rourke Pimps Etsy at the Oscars: Though I am extremely stoked for Betina Wassermann and the Etsy team, I am now extremely nervous the Mickey may have blown the top off my favorite shopping hideout. Listen to me, *hypnotically waving pocketwatch* THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ETSY...

Replacing World Landmarks With Cheap Souvenirs: Michael Hughes photographs of world landmarks with toys and souvenirs replacing the landmarks are both breathtaking and whimsically wonderful.

Mary Randolph Carter's Office At Ralph Lauren: For me, nothing is more inspiring than a creative office (which is why my cube looks like something a 6-year old's imagination exploded all over). These office pics are sure to get those gears a'turning.

Effects shop fulfills Amputee's Dream: If hobbits and Golem weren't reason enough to love Weta, here's one more: they created a mermaid tail for a leg amputee, allowing her to become a living mermaid!

Tropicana Discovers Some Buyers Are Passionate About Packaging: The customers have spoken: in the face of a massive public outcry against the new packaging design, Tropicana has announced it's decision to bring back the well-known and loved former branding. Since it's unveiling, massive comments have been made both on and offline about a supposed "generic" feel to the new look, and buyer's expressed difficulty finding the orange juice of choice in the supermarkets. As a designer, I find this entire thing fascinating: having been a big supporter of the new design, I feel it's major misstep was not integrating the iconic brand imagery of an orange with a straw poking out of it. This image has such brand power that customers were actually enraged it was removed - a major misstep for both the company and their design partners. Fellow designers take note: brand recognition usurps ideal design.

Fashion Bloggers Implied as Pariahs, sparks outrage: The article that launched a thousand posts - Daniel Saynt, publisher of the blog Fashion Indie, has launched a boycott campaign on the New York Observer in retaliation for comments in this article he feels are defaming to his blog community.

I have no idea where I stand on this matter - I understand both sides, and am really on the fence. I have not, nor will ever be a show crasher: I think press limitations are in place for a reason, and would hate to see fashion shows become open-media zoos. If that means I can't get into the Prada show, well, I can deal with that. At the same time, I am very much against the negative opinions many individuals have towards independent online publishers, and the article certainly doesn't help. Very interested in what people think about this issue.

Behold, Christian Siriano’s Shoes for Payless: Jesus Chrysler, Payless's designer collections are just getting better and better, and it's making my brain hurt. I want to lick all of these.

Handknit Car Cozy: As a knitter, I am extremely impressed. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go crochet my house a sweater...

I leave you with Nannerpuss...

"happiness in color" by Tinta China

Happy Monday!

Yeah, I know. I kind of want to beat me up for that one, too.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I spent mine inhaling paint fumes, as I repainted the office of the new pad (the former residents felt that GARISH ORANGE is an awesome color to languish in). The room is now a lovely peach, that kind of makes me want to lick the walls a bit. One room down, about 15 more to go! Let's look at some awesome links, shall we?

8 Ideas, Techniques & Tricks for your Web Design Toolkit: I have recently discovered the website, psdtuts.com, and since, have been drooling over every single tutorial I encounter. This particular article is essential for the modern web designer. Remember, a FAST designer is always the ideal, and these tricks are sure to quicken the entire creation process.

Linda Linda Linda: Me and my sister, LINDA, watched this yesterday (my sister rather insisted we do). The story centers around 4 Japanese high school girls trying to get their band ready to play the school's festival. The story is very heartwarming and genuine - my sister, who lived in Japan for 2 years, kept commenting about how actual everything portrayed was. Add to that a music score written by former Smashing Pumpkin, James Iha, and you have a movie that you should definitely not miss.

Roberto Cavalli, Spring 2009: Go behind the scenes and learn how to create the sultry, Brigitte Bardot look used on the runway this season.

The Dark Lord of Logos: An interview and gallery review of the work of Christophe Szpajdel, black metal band logo god.

The Good Wife’s Guide: My friend Robert sent this to me, to help me prepare myself for wife-dom. This 1950's list of tips for wives is a funny, indicative lesson on just how far we've actually come. Remember, "A good wife always knows her place."

Make Over Your Office Accessories: This slideshow has some great ideas on how you can organize and jazz up your plain jane office: from using metal trays as magnetic bulletin boards, to decorating your file folders with awesome papers. Sometimes it's the little things that turn something from blah to fantastic.

Finally, I cannot stop listening to the Killer's new song, "Human," though there has been some criticism of Brandon Flower's tuxedo jacket with plumed epaulettes. Let me make this clear: The jacket is GORGEOUS. This is EXACTLY what I want to see my musicians wearing. And for the record, it severely annoys me that whenever a musician tries to break out and make an artistic statement through their garb, every disgruntled music journalist is quick to call them a nutter. Boo. Anyway, enjoy...

Link Kaboom! Move Me.

11-23 by Sally Jane Vintage

*Sigh* My posting has been pitiful at best. I extend my deepest apologies - moving has overwhelmed every ounce of my being. It also does not help that the new house (which is AMAZING) does not have any internet currently. I have to admit, it is almost a relief, as I tend to stare at the world wide web with the glazed-eye devotion of a drugged lab rat when in a 20 foot radius of anything with a signal. Thanks to the help of some amazing people I am gifted to call friends, we moved the majority of me and Fiance Kaboom's poop this weekend. So the light at the end of the moving tunnel is in sight, and with it should be a return to our normal internet-y programming.

Also, still no word from Best Buy about my camera. I am officially urked, and will be yelling at someone promptly. In the meantime, some of the current diamonds of that mine field we call the internet...

10 Very Good Reasons Why You Should Grow a Giant Beard: Beards are awesome. I am always trying to convince Fiance Kaboom! to grow one (he grows a beaut), but he insists when he kisses me with one, it feels like I have a beard! Doh.

Whay All Little Children Should Speak French: After watching this (and consequently scraping my brains off the floor), I made the decision that when I have children, I am keeping them in an isolation chamber, and only immersing them in French their first 3 years. Sacre cute.

The magic of make-up, photography and a good model: Before you ask, this was not done with Photoshop, but good, old fashioned makeup and angles. A stunning example of what a good photographer can achieve.

Nowplayit.com: Think Guitar Hero for real musicians. This site is packed with tutorials that show you how to play your favorite songs, many BY the actual artists. I am all over getting my sister to learn to play Au Revoir Simone.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Trailer: FINALLY. I had to wait almost as long for this as Chinese Democracy, except this is sure not to suck. Dum DUM da dum dum, du DUM dah...

- Michelle Obama: The Natural: A fascinating Barack Obama's wife and best friend, and our new First Lady.

- Live Puppy Feed: I have a confession to make: for the past two weeks, this has been running on my monitor at work. Whenever I feel a little run down, I turn to it, and start squealing. (PS: the stream has downtime; if you visit and there is just a picture of puppies, it just means the camera is off, and will be back on later)

- Punk's Not Dead: 20 Punkest Films: I am a self-admitted reformed punk - yes, my days of sporting chelseas and dumpster-diving have come to an end. But I can still enjoy watching others partake in the punkdom.

- Moon & Moon: This self-proclaimed "rock opera" tells the story of a king seeking his lost queen, and is rife with child armies, hierophants and heretics. Special cameos from Devendra Banhart and Bat for Lashes too. Best part? The entire album is streaming for free on the LSE website. Don't miss this.

- Writing Content That Works For a Living: The is a whole lot of crap content on the web. This article breaks down what you need to do to make your content stand out.

- O, HAI. Did you hear that MTV just uploaded EVERY VIDEO EVER? I think you know where I'll be for the next 3 years. Please hold my calls.

Welcome to the Jungle: Link Love

Happy post-Halloween! As you can see, Fiance Kaboom and I had a blast, Gun's and Roses style. Slash was one of the first monikers I earned in grade school (that and Cindy Lauper), so I thought it only appropriate to pay homage to my look-alike now that my hair is once again suitable length. These photos don't show it, but Fiance Kaboom also has Axl's tattoo sharpie'd onto his forearm:

I am still trying to figure out if it is a credit or discredit to my wardrobe that everything I needed to become Slash is already a part of my daily wardrobe (sans hat). I'm gonna go with credit though, as this costume cost me a whopping ten bucks.

To aid in a post-Halloween recuperation, here are some links I have found particularly awesome...

Sealing Chanel: NOTCOT gives the skinny on how each Chanel bottle is hand-sealed.

I Give Up On T-Shirts: A great editorial on the over abundance of t-shirts worn today.

How to Get Phillip Lim’s Gypsy Eyes: A great look behind the scenes, and a quick tutorial on National Geographic–inspired gypsy eyes.

Viktor & Rolf's Barbican Exhibit With Side By Side Comparisons of the Dolls & Fashions With The Runway Models: A wonderful, grown-up dollhouse, Dutch designers Viktor & Rolf translate classic fashions into exquisite dollwear.

The Death of Trends; The Micro-trend: An interesting article discussing the rise of micro-trends in department stores, spearheaded by H&M and Topshop.

Kakuyasu Uchiide’s Eyelash Creatures: A fascinating look into the mind of the designer of outrageous eyelash-wear.
